William Aschenberg

William G. "Bud" Aschenberg, 87, of Lafayette, died at St. Anthony's Healthcare in Lafayette 6:30 AM Sunday March 27, 2011 where he had resided the past 2 and a half years. Mr. Aschenberg was born in Lafayette January 1, 1924, the son of the late Maurice and Helen Dienhart Aschenberg, and was a graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School and a lifelong Lafayette resident. He served in the US Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946 in the Pacific Theatre with the 132nd General Hospital on the Island of Biak. Mr. Aschenberg married Dorothy J. Moss in Lafayette September 3, 1949 and she preceded him in death April 5, 2004. He was employed as a maintenance man for St. Boniface Catholic Church for 30 years before his retirement. Mr. Aschenberg was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, and was very involved with woodworking; loved gardening and tending to his rose garden; and was a member of the Studebaker Drivers Club. He was also very involved with Alcoholics Anonymous for over 15 years, helping found a group at St. Boniface Church. Surviving is a daughter, Barbara J. Gustafson (husband Dave) of Mulberry, IN.; 4 sons, William J. Aschenberg (wife Robin) of Magnolia, Delaware; John M. Aschenberg (wife Julia) of West Lafayette, IN.; Thomas P. Aschenberg (wife Susan) of Lafayette, IN.; James P. Aschenberg (wife Laura) of Lafayette, IN.; and a brother, John F. Aschenberg (wife Norma) of Lafayette, IN. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Rita Kline and Helen Wiese Grogan. Friends may call at the HAHN-GROEBER FUNERAL HOME, 1104 Columbia St. Lafayette from the Rosary at 4:45 until 8 PM Wednesday. Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 AM Thursday, St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Fr. Dan Gartland officiating, with interment to follow at St. Boniface Cemetery with American Legion Post 11 military graveside rites.
