Waneta Toyoma

Waneta J. Toyama, 86, of West Lafayette, died at IU Arnett Hospital in Lafayette 3:10 PM Thursday July 2, 2015 where she had been a patient for the past week. Waneta was born in Kokomo, IN June 5, 1929, the daughter of the late Lester and Nellie Shaw Alexander and was a graduate of Rossville, (IN) High School. She married Dale Griffis in 1947, and they later divorced. Waneta then married Tosh Toyama and he preceded her in death in 2011. Waneta had resided in California from 1967 until returning to the Lafayette area in 1991. She was employed as a secretary and data processor in the aerospace software industry, and after returning to Lafayette, worked as a cashier for Meijer's. Surviving are two daughters, Connie Griffis of Lafayette, IN, Karen Griffis of West Lafayette, IN, and a son Bill Griffis (Debbie) of Lafayette, IN; a step-son, Steven Toyama of California, and two stepdaughters Susan Ackerman (Phil) of China and Linda Yee (Linton) of North Carolina. Also surviving are four grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Griffis. Private family services will be held at a later date.
