Virginia Simons

Virginia Newkirk Simons, 89, of Lafayette, died at Franciscan Health, St. Elizabeth Central Hospital 6:15 AM Sunday July 31, 2011 shortly after admission. Mrs. Simons was born in Linden, IN. September 14, 1921, the daughter of the late Joseph Franklin and Mary Stephenson Newkirk, and was a 1939 graduate of Linden, IN. High School and had resided in the Lafayette area since 1942. She married William "Bill" Simons August 24, 1956, and he preceded her in death in November, 1983. Mrs. Simons was employed at Landis-Gyr for 34 years, retiring in 1983. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, and a member and past worthy matron of Order of Eastern Star, Hope Chapter # 5. Surviving are 2 daughters, Nancy Summers and Kathy Richardson (husband Joseph), both of Brookston, IN.; a son, Kenneth Chapman (wife Pat) of Lafayette, IN. and a brother, Gerald Max Newkirk of Lafayette, IN. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter and a brother. Friends may call at the HAHN-GROEBER FUNERAL HOME, 1104 Columbia St., Lafayette from 5 to 8 PM Wednesday, with Hope Chapter #5 OES service at 7:30 PM Wednesday.
