Virgil E. Firkins, 97, of West Lafayette, formerly of Romney, IN. died at his residence at Westminster Village 7:02 AM Sunday December 29, 2013 where he had resided the past three years. Virgil was born in Linden, IN. December 18, 1916, the son of the late Elam and Velma Garmon Firkins, and was a graduate of Jackson Township High School in Tippecanoe County. He married Alberta M. Brunton in Lafayette August 26, 1961, and she preceded him in death July 19, 1991. Virgil served in the U. S. Army during World War II, and received training as an X-ray technician at an Army-Navy hospital in Arkansas and in Mississippi. He was employed as a production manager at Ag-Alumni Seed in Romney for 41 years, retiring March 31, 1985. Virgil traveled to many locations around the country for Ag-Alumni Seed, especially enjoying his trips to Florida. He was a member of Jackson Heights United Methodist Church. Surviving is a sister, Pauline Hinkel of Lafayette, and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Booker and Margaret Firkins and by two brothers, Arthur and Morris Firkins. Friends may call at the Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home, 1104 Columbia St., Lafayette from 10:00 AM until the service at 11:00 AM Saturday, Rev. Dr. R. Clayton Kendall officiating.
