Roland J. Richard, 75, of Dayton, IN. died at St. Elizabeth East Hospital 12:30 PM Thursday November 28, 2013 suddenly and unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack. Roland was born in Plymouth, IN. October 16, 1938 the son of the late Arthur J. and Agnes C. Finney Richard. He attended St. Michael's Grade School in Plymouth and was a graduate of Plymouth High School. Roland attended Purdue University, graduating with both a B.S. and M.S. in Education. He taught in the Tippecanoe School Corporation at Dayton Elementary and High Schools, Wea and Wainwright Junior High Schools until 1977. Roland had done contracting work part-time while teaching, and in 1977, he became a full time general contractor, and was still currently operating his business. Roland was a member St. Boniface Catholic Church, the Dayton Optimist Club, the Greater Lafayette Builders Association, did volunteer work for Habitat for Humanity, and was a 24 year member of the Gold Wing Riders Association, Chapter K. He married Marjorie E. "Marge" Hatke at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Lafayette June 10, 1961, and she survives. Surviving along with his wife are two daughters, Bonnie M. Hufford (husband Dean) of Frankfort, IN.; Nancy J. Verhey (husband Roger) of Romney, IN.; three sons, Brian K. Richard (wife Julie) of Mesa, AZ.; Jerry A. Richard (wife Kerry) of West Point, IN.; Steven A. Richard (wife Misty) of Lafayette, IN.; five brothers, Glenn Richard (wife Vickie) of Charleston, IL.; J. Arnold Richard (wife Rosie) of Kokomo, IN.; Roy Richard (wife Kathy) of Cincinnati, OH.; Ralph Richard of Ft. Myers, FL.; Robert Richard of Peru, IN.; and a sister, Barbara Ann Sigman (husband Francis) of Seattle, WA. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and one step-grandson. The Rosary will be recited at 3:45 PM Tuesday, with visitation following until 8:00 PM Tuesday at the Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home, 1104 Columbia St., Lafayette. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Boniface Catholic Church 10:00 AM Wednesday, Fr. Tim Alkire officiating, with interment to follow at St. Boniface Cemetery.
