Robert L. Frey, 80, of Lafayette passed away at Franciscan Hospital, St. Elizabeth East in Lafayette 7:46 AM Sunday September 2, 2018 where he had been a patient for two days. He had been in ill health the past five years with lingering COPD. Robert was born in Lafayette November 6, 1937, the son of the late Elmer and Rose E. Baker Frey and was a 1955 graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School. He served in the Indiana National Guard/Army Reserve for nine years in the 113th Medical Battalion. Robert was employed at Lafayette Home Hospital as a materials manager and chief store keeper 25 years before his retirement. He married Diane M. Martin in Lafayette September 19, 1970, and she survives. Robert was a life member, past commander and member of the honor guard of American Legion Post 11 of Lafayette. He was also a member of the 40 & 8, Voiture 364 of Lafayette; a volounteer at St. Ann’s Soup Kitchen and a life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles # 347 of Lafayette. Surviving with his wife is a brother, Charles E. Frey (Sherry) of Lafayette; three brothers-in-law, Tom Martin of Phoenix, AZ; Jerry Martin of Lafayette and Richard Martin of Dalton, GA; a special nephew and his wife, Jeffrey and Sherry Martin of Lafayette along with other nieces and nephews and a daughter, Robin Banks of Lafayette. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James A and Richard L. Frey. Friends may call from 4 until 7 PM Wednesday Sept 5 at the Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home, 1104 Columbia St., Lafayette. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday Sept. 6 in St. Mary Cathedral, Fr. Dominic C. Petan and Bishop Emeritus William L. Higi officiating. Interment will follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, with American Legion Post 11 graveside rites.
