Richard Frey

August 17, 1943 — June 29, 2016

Richard L. Frey (Dick) of Lafayette, Indiana, died June 29, 2016, in the Memory Care Unit of Mulberry Health Center, where he had resided for the past seven months. Dick was born August 17, 1943 to the late Elmer and Rosa Baker Frey. He grew up in Lafayette and graduated from Jefferson High School. Many people will remember Dick from his many years with McDonald's. When the original McDonalds opened in West Lafayette on Brown Street, Dick went to work as a "fry cook" at age 15. Over the course of 30 plus years, Dick worked his way up the ladder with McDonalds and was one of their top performing store managers. He was a proud graduate of "Hamburger University" in Chicago and oversaw the opening of the McDonalds stores throughout the Greater Lafayette area during the 70's, 80's, and early 90's. In addition, he traveled to other states to supervise the opening of new McDonald's stores and troubleshoot under performing stores. After leaving McDonalds, Dick moved to Monticello and opened The Tree House family restaurant which he operated for a few years before moving back to Lafayette and working at Tippecanoe Villa as a cook. During his retirement years, he was back in the burger business working at the Teal Road Burger King. Dick was a member of Zion Chapel, Sons of the American Legion, and an avid Purdue fan. He enjoyed traveling and spent time visiting Fairfield Glade, TN, Hawaii, California, Cancun, Mexico and cruising the Caribbean Islands. He will be remembered by his three surviving older brothers, James A. Frey (Axie), Robert L. Frey (Diane), Charles E. Frey (Sherry), all of Lafayette and several nieces and nephews whom were very close to him. Friends may call at the Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home, 1104 Columbia Street, Lafayette, IN 47901 from 12:00 PM until the service at 1:00 PM Tuesday July 5, with interment to follow at Spring Vale Cemetery, Pastor Larry Williams officiating. Memorials can be made to Zion Chapel, 8989 SR 26E, Lafayette, IN 47905 or Salvation Army, 1110 Union Street, Lafayette, IN 47904.
