Richard Ira Bartlett, age 60, of Delphi, IN, died Sunday, January 30, 2011, at Indiana University Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, after an eight month illness. Born December 4, 1950, he was the son of the late Irving G. and Ruth E. Bartlett.
Richard was employed by Purdue University Building Services for nearly 10 years, and was also artist/owner of "A Glass Image" stained glass studio in Delphi where he custom crafted many fine glass works of art. He received a personal commendation from Purdue University for the quality of services he performed there. He collected antique tapestry as well as antique magic lanterns, slides, and had a fascination for penguins. He found great enjoyment in nature and in searching for prehistoric Native American Artifacts, hunting mushrooms in the spring, and fishing with his brother, Robert. His generosity, kindness and gentle nature were constant and endearing qualities.
Richard was a graduate of West Lafayette High School in 1970, and also graduated from the Indiana Baking Academy in Indianapolis, Indiana. Following a period of study, he began his stained glass studio in Lafayette, later moving to Delphi.
He married Jane Hynds, of Kokomo, in the spring of 1973. The marriage was dissolved in 1985.
Richard was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Lafayette, Indiana, and also the Jefferson Township Conservation Club of Monticello, Indiana.
Richard was preceded in death by his twin brother, Robert I. Bartlett, his father, his mother, and nephews, Cpl. Brady L. Bartlett, USMC, and Pvt. Paul F. Wilson, USArmy.
Surviving are brother, Joseph D. (Del) Bartlett of Lafayette and sisters, Mary Bartlett Conlin (husband Joseph) of Tallahasse, Florida; Gail A. Bartlett (fiancAC. Don Lancaster) of Lafayette; and Karen R. Bartlett (fiance' W.Michael Watson) of San Diego, California. Also surviving are nephews, C. Bartlett Traviolia of Clearwater, Florida; John Colby Bartlett (wife Michele) of Battle Ground, Indiana; Joseph (Joey) C. Bartlett (wife Amy) of West Lafayette, Indiana; and Bruce W. Wilson (wife Emily) of Monticello, Indiana.
Richard's deep and abiding reverence for the natural world will live on in his stained glass imagery and in the memories of those who knew and loved him.
Friends may call on Friday Feb. 11, 2011, from 5 until 7 PM at the HAHN-GROEBER FUNERAL HOME, 1104 Columbia Street, Lafayette. A memorial service will follow on Saturday at 10:30 AM, the Reverend Phil Leichty officiating with
interment at Burr Oak Mennonite Cemetery near Rensselear.
The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the Tippecanoe County Historical Association, 909 South Street, Lafayette, IN 47901.
