Miriam Rebecca (Hickner) Walters, 75 passed away at St. Elizabeth Central Hospital, Lafayette, Indiana on October 15, 2013 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Miriam was born in Elwood, Indiana, April 26th, 1938 to Jerome and Edith Hickner. She graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School. She was married to Joseph R. Walters on March 2nd, 1957 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elwood, Indiana. Miriam was very active in all church activities including but not limited to Saint Lawrence parish council, EMHC, funeral dinner committee, CRHP, Catholic School's Garage Sale. She was also passionately involved with many charitable organizations, most notably Relay for Life and the McKee Kentucky Appalachian Fund. Miriam's first love was her family and is survived by loving husband Joseph, brothers Ed (Michele) Hickner, Bernie Hickner, Jerry (Betty) Hickner, Steve (Katie) Hickner; eight children, Joe (Miki), Gilbert, AZ, Bob (Michelle), Zionsville, IN, John (Kathy), Indianapolis, IN, Bill (Donna), Indianapolis, IN, Kathy, Lafayette, IN, Edie, Lafayette, IN, Jim (Theresa), Zionsville, IN, MaryBeth (Steve) Yeaman, Lafayette, IN and twenty-one grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Grandchildren Kelly (Javier), Becky, Kyle (fiancAC.e Jessie), Megan (fiancAC. Alex), Caitlin, Andrew, Kiersten, Michael, Kelcie, Joseph, Ben, Jake, Rachel, Matthew, Bethany, Annaleah, Adam, Alex, Emily and great-grandchildren Logan, Chloe and Lily. She was preceded in death by parents Jerome and Edith (Jackson) Hickner, sister Margie (Jack)Cannon, infant sister and brother Mary and Philip, and granddaughters Jamie and Jennifer. Although family was her first love, she enjoyed many family activities including camping, travelling, auctions, and attending her children and grandchildren's activities.
Viewing will be held from 4:00PM to 8:00PM with the Rosary at 4:00PM and the Vigil service at 7:30PM, Friday, October 18th at Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home, 1104 Columbia St., Lafayette. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Lawrence Catholic Church, Lafayette, Indiana on Saturday, October 19th at 10:30AM with a viewing from 9:30AM to 10:30AM. She will be laid to rest at Saint Boniface cemetery following the mass.
