Mildred Harris

Mildred L. Harris, 93, of Newburgh, IN., formerly of Lafayette, died at the residence of her daughter, Mary A. Harris in Newburgh 12:03 AM Monday January 26, 2009. Mrs. Harris had been residing with her daughter the past 8 years. Born in Royal Center, Indiana September 26, 1915, the daughter of the late Frederic E. and Marie Ranten Hoffman, she was a graduate of Royal Center High School. She married John T. Harris, Sr. in Lafayette July 15, 1934, and he preceded her in death December 26, 1980. Mrs. Harris had worked as a secretary in the Purdue University Residence Hall Administration office, retiring in 1981. She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, the Ladies Altar and Aid Society at the church; a member of the church choir and had been very active in various other activities in the church. She also enjoyed playing the piano. Surviving are 2 daughters, Mary A. Harris of Newburgh, IN.; Suzanne K. Gilbert (husband Tom) of Madison WI.; and 3 sons, John J. Harris, Jr., (wife Barbara) of Lafayette, IN.; Michael F. Harris (wife Suzanne) of Ingleside, IL.; and Kevin M. Harris (wife Tammy) of Lafayette, IN. also surviving are 22 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by a son, Thomas E. Harris; 3 brothers, Jake, William & Donald Hoffman; and by 3 sisters, Helen LaDuct, Florence Harvey & Frances Snyder. Friends may call at the HAHN-GROEBER FUNERAL HOME, 1104 Columbia St., Lafayette from the Rosary service at 3:45 PM until 7 PM Thursday. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Lawrence Catholic Church 10:00 AM Friday, Fr. Dan Gartland officiating, with interment in St. Mary's Cemetery.
