Mildred Elizabeth (Poody) Buckles, 93, of West Point, passed away at 4:15 p.m., May 28, 2017 at St. Anthony Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, where she had been a patient for several months. She was born March 4, 1924, in Lafayette, to the late Charles L. and Mae Crowe. Poody lived her entire full and rich life in Tippecanoe County. Asked often about her nickname, Poody always told the same story: when she was born, her parents did not have a name chosen for a baby girl, so the doctor called her “Poody” and Poody she remained throughout her life. She attended St. Lawrence Elementary School and graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School in 1942. After her fiancé, John William (Bill) Buckles returned from his military service in the China/Burma/India Theater during WWII, they were married on December 22, 1945 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church. After high school, Poody worked at the Purdue National Bank until the birth of her children. Then in 1965, she began work as a clerk at the West Point Post Office, and eventually was named Postmaster of that post office. She retired from the United States Postal Service in 1989. She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, and a longtime supporter of the St Ann’s soup kitchen and various other national charitable organizations. Over the years, she was a loyal Purdue fan, and enjoyed attending Purdue football and both men’s and women’s basketball games. She greatly enjoyed her family, and was a supportive and loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and friend. Surviving are her children, Steven Buckles (Jan) of West Point; Patricia Buckles Yost (Jack) of State College, PA; Joseph Buckles of Chicago; and Kimberly Buckles Henry (Paul) of Indianapolis. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren: Amanda Buckles Barash (Boris), Stephanie Buckles Hunt (Craig), Billy Buckles (Tram), Matt Buckles (fiance Rachel), Elizabeth Yost, Julia Yost, and Sean Henry; and two great-grandchildren: Asher Hunt and expected great-grand daughter, Madeline Barash. Poody was preceded in death by her first-born child, Jimmy Lee Buckles, in 1946; her husband Bill, in 1982; and by her four siblings: Charles F Crowe, Donald Crowe, Robert Crowe and Mary Crowe Bloyd. The Rosary will be recited at 3:45 PM with visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday June 2 at the Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home, 1104 Columbia St. in Lafayette, IN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday June 3 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow at West Point Cemetery. Those wishing may contribute in Poody’s name to St Ann’s Catholic Church Soup Kitchen in Lafayette, to the West Point Methodist Church, or to the West Point Cadet Community Park, c/o Karla Ross, 6721 W 600 S, West Point IN 47992.
