Michael Nichols

February 5, 1963 — February 27, 2017

Michael Fidelis Nichols, 54, passed away on February 27, 2017, at his home in Noblesville, IN. Mike, as he was known by most, was born in Benton County, IN, on February 5, 1963, to his parents Tom and Mary (Harrington) Nichols. He graduated from Benton Central High School in Oxford, IN. Growing up, Mike played baseball, basketball, football and swam. On November 5, 1988, he married Maureen Hughes in Indianapolis, IN. They were married for 28 years. At 22, three years prior to his wedding day, he began a 30-plus-year career with Martin Marietta in Noblesville, IN, as a heavy machinery operator, where he worked tirelessly through early mornings and frequent weekends to provide for his wife and children. He spread a love for sports onto his children with immense pleasure, repeatedly dictating his work schedule, and bypassing more conventional vacation opportunities, to never miss a child’s ballgame. In time, these early rises led to a vast admiration of sunrises, a passion he regularly shared with loved ones, eventually requiring a cell phone upgrade to allot him more space for his photographs. A fond supporter of sports, sunrises, as well as action movies, vitamins, emojis and exclamation points, Mike will be greatly missed by all the friends and family he left behind. He will be remembered for his warm demeanor, unrelenting work ethic, and strong pride and love he held for his family. Mike was preceded in death by his brother Jackie Nichols of West Lafayette, IN. Mike is survived by his wife Maureen Nichols of Noblesville, IN; his daughter Charissa Nichols of Indianapolis, IN; his son, Michael Nichols and fiancé Lindsey Firks of Baltimore, MD; his son John Nichols of Noblesville, IN; his parents Tom and Mary Nichols of West Lafayette, IN; his sisters, Penny Pava of Oxford, IN, Cindy Nichols of West Lebanon, Nancy (Ron) Surface of Carmel, IN, Mary Jayne (Mike) Downey of West Lafayette, IN, and Erin (Tom) Petry of Lafayette, IN; and his brother, Rick Nichols of Boston, MA. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church at 502 South Michigan St, Oxford, IN 47971. Visitation will be from 11AM-1PM with services to follow. Memories and condolences may be left at www.hahngroeberfuneralhome.com. A college fund has been set up for Mike’s youngest son, John (14).
