Mary Ellen Freel, 79, of Lafayette, died at Signature Healthcare Center in Lafayette Friday, January 3, 2014, where she had resided the past two years. Mary Ellen was born in Lafayette October 10, 1934, the daughter of the late Wilfred and Fairy McDonald Freel. She was a graduate of West Lafayette High School in 1952, and received her bachelor's degree from Purdue University in 1956. Mary Ellen was a member of the Spiral Sisters, Women's Poetry Circle, Women's Creative Writing Group, The Novel Group, the National Organization for Women, Greater Lafayette Indiana Pro Choice Group, Mother's Lunch, and the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greater Lafayette. She enjoyed writing, reading, and going to the theatre. For a number of years, she was employed in the instrumentation lab in the Chemistry Department at Purdue University. Surviving is her son, John C. Mogridge of Los Angeles, Calif. A memorial gathering will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, January 25, with service beginning at 1:30 p.m., at the Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home, 1104 Columbia St., Lafayette. Friends also are invited to gather following the service at the home of Jim and Pat Altepeter, 1918 Echo St., Lafayette. Those desiring may contribute in her memory to their favorite library.
