Marvin Sherfey

Marvin Eugene "Gene" Sherfey, 86, of Linden, died at Clarian-Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, IN. Friday morning, May 14, 2010. Born August 24, 1923 in Linden, IN. the son of the late Harrison Porter and Loma Flowers Sherfey, he was a 1941 graduate of Linden High School. Mr. Sherfey had resided most of his life in Crawfordsville. He first married Dorothy Thomasell of Boston, MA. On January 24, 1946, and she died May 13, 1990. He later married Mary Frances (McBee) Winger in Linden, IN. March 19, 2004, and she survives. Mr. Sherfey served in the US Navy during World War II as a First Mechanic on the USS Lexington aircraft carrier, and later served in the Korean War. He spent most of his working career with Standard Oil until his retirement in 1988. He attended the Linden United Methodist Church and was a member of VFW Post 1431 in Crawfordsville. He enjoyed playing cards, watching sports and spending time with family and friends. Surviving with his wife are 3 daughters, Audrey Sherfey of Santa Rosa, CA.; Karen McKinney (husband Bill) of Crawfordsville and Paula Elmore (husband Brian) of Lafayette, IN.; a brother, Loyd Sherfey of Waveland, IN.; and 2 step-sons, Rodger Winger of Coatesville, IN. and Keith Winger of South Bend, IN. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren, Chad McKinney of Crawfordsville, IN.; Jeff McKinney of Murfreesboro, TN.; Stephen McKinney of Indianapolis, IN., along with Megan and Katie Elmore of Lafayette, IN.; 8 step-grandchildren and 8 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 3 sisters and 3 brothers. Friends may call at the HAHN-GROEBER FUNERAL HOME, Linden, from 4 until 7 PM Monday. Funeral service at HAHN-GROEBER FUNERAL HOME 10:00 AM Tuesday, Rev. Lamont Bonath officiating. Entombment at Oak Hill Cemetery Mausoleum, Crawfordsville with VFW Post 1431 military rites.
