Leonard Lewis

Leonard Eugene “Lug” Lewis died peacefully at age 88, with his wife Ernestine by his side, on May 14, 2016. He was born in Lafayette, Indiana to Alfred and Vera Lewis and continued to live in Lafayette until he retired and moved to Logansport, Indiana in 1988. Leonard attended Canterbury College, Danville, IN; Purdue University, Indiana State University and Indiana University, receiving his Master’s Degree in Education. He married Ernestine (Dietel) of Fort Wayne, Indiana on August 20, 1949 and they enjoyed 66 wonderful years together as best friends and constant companions, sharing, celebrating and supporting each other through life's many journeys. Leonard was active in leadership roles in the communities of Lafayette where he was elected as a City Councilman for the first District, November 6, 1973; and in Logansport where he resided for a number of years. He served as a science/civics/guidance teacher for the Lafayette School Corporation at Sunnyside Jr. High School, but his role as husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather was his most cherished. Lug knew no strangers and was known to sit down and talk whenever needed by friends, family, and people he had just met. He was a community servant with the Lafayette Lions Club for many years, New Hope Lutheran Church in Monticello, Indiana and he will be deeply missed by all those he touched. In addition to his wife, he is survived by Mark Lewis (Kathy)Windsor, Colorado, Linda Marsh (Steve) Portland, Indiana, Laura Pottinger (John) North Aurora, Illinois, grandchildren, great-grand-children, nieces, and nephews. Friends may call at the Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home, 1104 Columbia St., Lafayette one hour prior to the memorial service at 11:00 AM Wednesday May 25, Pastor Doug Givan officiating.
