Joseph Louis “Joe” Emond, 85, of Lafayette, died at Cumberland Point Healthcare in West Lafayette 7:58 PM Thursday Sept. 7, 2017 where he had been a patient since mid July. He was born in Wolcott, IN February 24, 1932, the son of the late Bert and Anna Haberkorn Emond and was a graduate of Wolcott High School. Joe served in the U.S. Air Force from January 1951 until January 1955, and was stationed in Japan, Korea and Indo-China as an aircraft mechanic. He worked as an aircraft mechanic for Purdue Aeronautical Corp., Purdue Airlines, Reid Airways and Lafayette Aviation. Joe retired from Lafayette Aviation after 20 years as their director of maintenance. He married Odetta Stoller on Sept. 2, 1956 in Remington and she died Feb. 1, 1977. Joe later married Velma Browne in 1980, and she preceded him in death. He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, St. Lawrence Men’s Club, Remington Catholic Order of Foresters and Wolcott American Legion Post 294, Professional Aviation Maintenance Association, Experimental Aircraft Association and the American Truck Historical Society. Joe received the National General Aviation Service Technician of the Year Award in 1987. Surviving is a daughter Debra Puetz (husband David) of West Lafayette; a sister, Mary Inez Welsh of Lafayette; a brother, Russell Emond of Wolcott; four grandchildren, Jennifer Voges (Eric); Amber Fontanes (Enrique); Joe Puetz and John Puetz (Carmine); and by nine great-grandchildren, Josh, Tyler, Brandon, Quinton, Erika and Logan Puetz; Corbin Goode, Alberto and Enrique Fontanes, Jr. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Leona Hayward and a brother, Cy Francis Emond. Friends may call at the Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home, 1104 Columbia St., Lafayette from 5 until 7 PM Tuesday Sept. 12. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Lawrence Catholic Church 10:30 AM Wednesday Sept. 13, Fr. Cole Daily officiating. The interment service will be held at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Remington, IN 2:30 PM (EDT) Wednesday, with military rites by Remington American Legion Post 280. The family asks that memorials be directed to the Indiana Multiple Sclerosis Society, 3500 DePauw Blvd., Suite 1040, Indpls, IN 46268.
