John P. Halsmer, 91, of West Lafayette, died at George Davis Manor 2:00 A.M. Tuesday August 12, 2008, where he had had been a patient since October. Born in Lafayette, Indiana January 31, 1917, the son of the late Cornelius John and Roselia Metzger Halsmer, he was a life long Lafayette resident. Mr. Halsmer was a graduate of Monitor, IN. High School, and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a pilot, and a partner and owner/operator of the former Halsmer Airport in Lafayette with two of his brothers, Joe and Francis Halsmer and Ray Korty. Mr. Halsmer was first married to Elizabeth Schleicher in Detroit, MI. April 22, 1944, and she died June 3, 1991. He then married Irene Enz June 22, 1994, and she survives. Surviving with his wife are 3 daughters, Mary Ellen Halsmer of Bloomington, IL.; Jean Ann Middleton of Lafayette; Linda Rose Halsmer of Lafayette; 2 sons, Richard Paul Halsmer of Tampa, FL. And Thomas Edward Halsmer of Lafayette; a brother, Francis Halsmer (wife Louise) of St. Petersburg, FL; and 2 sisters, Sister Marianna Halsmer of Los Angeles, CA. and Loretta Sosdian (husband John) of Neptune City, New Jersey.
Friends may call at the HAHN-GROEBER FUNERAL HOME, 1104 Columbia St., from the Scripture service at 4:45 PM until 8:00 PM Friday. Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 AM Saturday, St. Ann's Catholic Church, Fr. Ambrose Ziegler officiating. Interment with VFW military rites at St. Boniface Cemetery. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by a son, William John Halsmer, a brother Joseph and a sister Evelyn Elizabeth Halsmer.
