John Brutus, Sr

July 1, 1932 — September 25, 2015

We celebrate the life of John Douglas Brutus, Sr. who died peacefully on September 25, 2015. John lived his entire life in Pine Village and will always be remembered in the community. In a farmer's language, John "cut a wide swath" because he knew and enjoyed all kinds of people, far and wide.
He was a lifelong member Pine Village Methodist Church, where he served Jesus Christ, his Savior.
John graduated from Pine Village School (Class of 1950). He joined the United States Air Force and served on Okinawa Island during the Korean Conflict. After USAF service, John returned to Pine Village, Indiana and completed the Purdue Agricultural Short Course.
While stationed at Laughlin Air Force base in Del Rio, Texas, John met and married Elizabeth Ellen Blackmon on March 18, 1954. Together, they raised four children on the family farm.
Survived by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Ellen Brutus, and children, John (Dawn) Brutus Jr., Joanna Lynn (Wayne) Spiering, Bob (Connie) Brutus and Bill (Stephanie) Brutus.
John loved his grandchildren, including Katherine (husband Kris) Foust, Ashley Brutus, Beau Brutus, Chelsea (husband Nick) Fillhouer, Tadd Blanton, Aubrey (husband Clay) Andrews, Blake Brutus, Blaine Brutus and Bayley Brutus. John is also blessed by great-grandchildren, Zoey and Rylee Foust and Boden "Bode" Fillhouer.
John was preceded in death by his parents Glenn H. and Mary Katherine (Kate); his sister Wilma Jean Rhode, his granddaughter Molly Elizabeth Blanton, son-in-law Randy Blanton and many other close family members.
He enjoyed being near Pine Creek, hunting mushrooms and loved riding motorcycles in his younger life. He loved his dogs, most recently Gunner. He enjoyed growing sweet corn and giving the produce to friends. He always loved the US Air Force. When military planes would fly over, farm operations would stop for discussion to identify subject aircraft.
His family wishes to thank John's caregivers, especially Beverly Vanderhoff (a family friend forever); and Great Lakes Caring Hospice, (particularly care-givers Maggie, Connie and Kathleen).
Friends may call at the Pine Village United Methodist Church on Saturday Oct. 10 from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, with military honors at 12:45 PM. and the memorial service starting at 1:00 PM, Pastor Mike Link officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Pine Village United Methodist Church. Hahn-Groeber Funeral & Cremation Service is caring for the family.
