John Christian “Chris” Benner, 70, of Linden, passed away at his residence suddenly and unexpectedly Friday August 4, 2017 at 5:30 PM of an apparent heart attack. Mr. Benner was born in Rensselaer, IN April 28, 1947, the son of Wilma L. Medley Benner and the late Elmer Christian Benner. Chris was a 1965 graduate of Lafayette Central Catholic High School and served in the U. S. Marine Corps from 1967 until 1970 during the Viet Nam War. He married Alice M. Johns in Lafayette September 8, 1981 and she survives. Chris was a member and treasurer of the Crawfordsville Gun Club; a Life member of the Linden Railroad Museum, a member of American Legion Post 11 of Lafayette and a member of the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed woodworking and spoiling his children and grandchildren. Mr. Benner retired in 2002 from Eli Lilly and Co. as a supervisor in the BLA Department. Surviving with his wife Alice is his mother, Wilma L. Benner of West Lafayette; three daughters, Jennifer Feliu (husband Rafael) of Soddy Daisy, TN; Heather DeLong (husband Troy) of Brookston, IN; Amber McHenry of West Lafayette, IN; a son, Eric Benner of Lafayette, IN; a brother, Patrick Benner (wife Karan) of West Lafayette, IN; and by two sisters, Mary Ann Hocker (husband Thomas) of Hanover, PA and Sandra Ohrberg of Colorado Springs, CO. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren, Emily, Alex, Ryleigh and Pau and by a great-granddaughter, Blaire. Friends may call from 11:00 AM until the funeral at 1:00 PM Wednesday August 9 at the Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home, Linden. Interment will follow at Linden Cemetery with American Legion Post 11 military graveside rites. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
