John Mark Almon

John Mark Almon, 88, of West Lafayette, passed away at University Place in West Lafayette at 12:00 PM, Tuesday June 4, 2024. John was born December 18, 1935, the son of the late Robert E. and Nancy Almon in Owensville, IN. He was a 1953 graduate of Owensville High School, 1957 graduate of Oakland City College and received his masters degree in 1961 from Purdue University. He taught at Owensville High School, Culver Military Academy as well as Elston High School in Michigan City and then worked in the Continuing Education program at Purdue University for 35 years. John married Karen Bower on June 9, 1990 and they spent 34 joyful years together. He was a gentle and kind person, loved by everyone. In his free time he enjoyed playing golf and tennis and took great pride in maintaining the landscaping at his home. He was an avid Purdue Athletics fan and loved watching Purdue games as well as his grandchildren's sporting events. 

Surviving is his wife, Karen Almon (Kovach), son, Mark (Peggy) Nearing of Tucson, AZ; daughter, Tammy (John) Meier of Grosse Pointe Farms, MI; son, Charlie (Paige) Bower of Denver, CO; daughter, Kelly (Kevin) McConnell of Troy, MI; grandchildren, Grey (Marie) Nearing, Cale (Gina) Bering with great-grandchild, Finneas Bering, Kate Nearing; Haley (Jordy) Hewitt with great-grandchild, Rory Hewitt, Hannah Meier, John Patrick Meier; Catie (Troy) Hudson, Charlie Bower, Gus Bower, & Lou Bower; Jack McConnell & Sean McConnell.


He was preceded in death by his first wife Sabre Jane Almon; sons Timothy & J. Bradford Almon; 4 brothers & 4 sisters. Friends may call at Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home in Lafayette from 4 until 7 PM Sunday, July 7, 2024. Visitation will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in West Lafayette from 9 AM until the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM on Monday, July 8, 2024. Please use the Wood Street parking garage. The interment will be at a later date at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Kentland, Indiana. Memorial masses can be made to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church or a donation to Honor Flight, Box L-4016 Columbus, OH 43260. Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home of Lafayette is caring for the Almon family.
