James A. Handy, 94, of Fowler, IN passed away at his residence early Tuesday morning, March 5, 2024. James was born in Sheldon Township, Iroquois, County, Illinois the son of Frank L. and Lottie L.  (Stanley) Handy and was a 1947 graduate of Center Township High school in Fowler. He married Mary Ellen Jessup in Fowler, IN November 17, 1957, and she preceded him in death March 22, 2011. James served in the U. S. Airforce during the Korean War from 1948 until 1952. He was employed as a printer for the Benton Review Newspaper for 20 years, and later as an insurance agent for Handy Insurance Agency for over 20 years. James was a member of the Fowler Presbyterian Church, the American Legion Post 57, the 40 & 8, and the AmVets Post 102. Being very active in the American Legion, he held many positions, including post commander in 1959, 1985, 1995, 2003 and 2021; 2nd District Commander in 1964; being awarded the Distinguished Service Award in 2003; and Chef de Gar of Voiture 755 in 1989 and 2001. 

Surviving are three daughters, Janet Hare of Brazil, IN, Julie Jenkins of San Antonio, TX, Jill Handy (wife Kim) of Oxford, IN and a son, James Handy of Oxford, IN and his loving care giver, Stacey Shipp. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, a grandson, Josh Butler, two sisters, Norma Puetz and Marjorie Ammer; and by two brothers, Frank and Harold Handy. Those desiring may contribute in memoriam to American Legion Post 57, Fowler, IN.
