Jack A. Douthit, 76, of Lafayette, died at University Place Healthcare in West Lafayette 11:50 AM Sunday June 9, 2013. He was born in Lafayette May 10, 1937, the son of the late Chester A. and Lorene Sutherland Douthit and was a 1957 graduate of Klondike High School and attended several trade schools.
He married Anita Buck September 6, 1958, and she survives. They resided for many years in West Lafayette before moving to Lafayette. Jack served in the Indiana National Guard in the 113th Medical Battalion, from which he received an honorable discharge. He was employed throughout his life in the electrical business. His last employer was the City of Lafayette in which he was an electrical inspector in the Engineering Department for 18 years. Jack was a member of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors where he served as president of the Indiana Chapter and on the board of directors.
Jack got great pleasure helping out in the community. He served as precinct committee chairperson, was a life member of Kiwanis International; his local membership was with the Kiwanis Club of Lafayette. He served as Kiwanis Club president twice, also serving as the Sagamore Division Lt. Governor in 1995-96. Through Kiwanis he became involved in many ways in the community especially helping to transport patients to Riley Hospital for outpatient care. He served for Kiwanis as an usher and ticket taker at Purdue football and girl's basketball. Jack was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #347 and an associate member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Lafayette Police Department.
First Christian Church played a very special part in his life. Jack served as property chair for several years and Diaconate until his health made that no longer possible when he became Diaconate Emeritus.
Surviving with his wife is a daughter, Susan Douthit Walker and son-in-law, Mark Walker; granddaughter, Briana Walker; sister-in-law, Evelyn Buck Douthit of West Lafayette; brother-in-laws Bob Buck of Lafayette and Frank Buck, wife Meg of South Bend. Also surviving is a niece, Debbie Johnson, husband Matt of West Lafayette; nephews Richard, wife Joyce Douthit of Plainfield and William, wife Jennifer Douthit of Lafayette and several great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Marilyn Ann Douthit; brother, Richard C. Douthit; a daughter Janet Douthit Greeson and a grandson, Tyler Jerome Walker.
Friends may call at the First Christian Church, 329 N. 6th Street, Lafayette, 47901 from 5 until 8 PM Thursday. Funeral services will be held at the church 10:30 AM Friday, Rev. Greg Eberhard and Rev. Jacob Hoffman officiating, with interment to follow at Grand View Cemetery in West Lafayette. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for donations to Kiwanis Indiana Foundation for District Riley Project or First Christian Church.
