Irene Anderson

Thursday December 22, 2016. She was born July 5, 1935 in Dublin, Ireland the daughter of the late Patrick and Mary O’Donnell Staunton and came to the United States in 1962. Irene graduated from high school in Dublin, and received her degree as a registered nurse from St. Patrick Dunn’s in Dublin and was also a certified midwife. She married Dr. William G. Mentzer July 24, 1965 in Skokie, IL and he preceded her in death April 17, 1999. Irene later married Byron Anderson in 2000 and he preceded her in death April 2012. She was a member of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in West Lafayette and was an avid golfer, making three holes-in-one in three years. Irene was a beloved mother and a devoted nana to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are three daughters, Lynn L. Freed (Ken) of Elizabethtown, PA; Katherine I. Kincaid (Tim) of Lafayette, IN and Christine J. Hunt (Bill) of Atlanta, GA; two sons, Bill C. Mentzer of Madison, TN and John P. Mentzer of Encinitas, CA. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, Liz Smith, Michael Freed, Brian Freed, Katie Pechin, Thomas Pechin, Emma Pechin, Julia Hunt, Frances Hunt, Aurora, Catalina and Alicia Mentzer along with five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers. The Rosary will be recited at 4:45 PM Tuesday Dec. 27 followed by visitation until 7:00 PM at the Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home, 1104 Columbia St., Lafayette. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday Dec. 28, 10:00 AM at The Church of the Blessed Sacrament, 2224 Sacramento Dr., West Lafayette, Fr. Theodore C. Dudzinski officiating, with private family interment to follow at St. Mary Cemetery. If friends desire, memorials may be made to either St. Elizabeth Hospice or the SURF Center.
