Hubert D. Yount
Hubert D. Yount, 88, passed away at home November 25, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. Hubert was the youngest child of the late Melvin B. Yount, Jr. & Ruth L. Garrott. Hubert was born in Lafayette, Indiana on April 28, 1926 and was raised in Brookston, Indiana. He was a 1944 graduate of Brookston High School. Hubert served as a Sergeant in the United States Army from 1944 to 1948. He spent most of his Army service in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri where he met his first wife, Pauline L. Ausfahl. They were married on September 22, 1945 in Waynesville, Missouri. Pauline passed away on March 30, 1995 just a few months before their 50th wedding anniversary.
He married Patricia A. Lehnen on November 28, 1998 in Lafayette, Indiana. Mr. Yount passed away three days before their 16th wedding anniversary.
In 1950 Hubert became a licensed Realtor and joined with Forest Glick to form the real estate agency "Glick and Yount". Eight years later Mr. Yount founded his own agency, Yount Realty Co., Inc. He owned and operated Yount Realty for 45 years. He was named Indiana Realtor of the Year in 1972, and was director of the National Association of Realtors for 17 years. He served as President of the Greater Lafayette Board of Realtors and served as President of the Indiana Association of Realtors. The last nine years of his life he worked for Parkside Pharmacy providing delivery services to patients.
Mr. Yount was a member of First Christian Church Disciples of Christ serving as trustee and ordained elder. He also was involved in several community organizations over the years; including the Board of Directors for the Lafayette Park Foundation, an appointee to the Lafayette Board of Aviation, co-founder of the TSC Building Trades Program, appointee of the Lafayette Historical Preservation Board, and past president of the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Yount served four years as a Tippecanoe County Commissioner from 1991-94. Among the projects he and his colleagues oversaw were the renovation of the Courthouse, and the revitalization of Cary Home. He was particularly proud of his role in maintaining the integrity of the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds. Through individual donations, he raised in excess of $90,000 in eight days to fund the construction of the new Swine Barn. He loved politics, and he had the opportunity to meet four U.S. Presidents in his life.
Surviving with his wife is one daughter, Susan K. Gerhart (husband Randy) of Lafayette, four stepdaughters: Lisa A. Brummett (companion Greg Yoder) of Lafayette, Deborah Puetz (husband Matt) of Lafayette, Beth Rayfield (husband Kyle) of Indianapolis, and Susan Ausban (husband Sam) of West Lafayette; one sister, Meredith Weiderhaft (husband Ralph) of Lafayette. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren, Stacy Kain (husband Brian), Andrew Smith, Taylor Gerhart, Tyler Gerhart, Erica Puetz, Ryan Puetz, Spencer Ausban, Maddie Ausban, Sterling Brummett, Calli Rayfield, Kyle Rayfield and Lane Rayfield; and by three great-grandchildren, Luna Puetz, Baby Kain and Tristan Murphy; and by two nieces and four nephews. Mr. Yount was preceded in death by one sister-Virginia Williams.
Friends will be received from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm Sunday, November 30 at First Christian Church, 329 North 6th Street, Lafayette, IN. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 am Monday, December 1 at First Christian Church with Rev. Greg Eberhard officiating. Burial will follow at Spring Vale Cemetery, 2580 Schuyler Avenue, Lafayette, Indiana with American Legion Post 11 military honors.
