Helmut Hartwich

Helmut Hartwich, 89, of West Lafayette, passed away at his home Wednesday, October 16, 2024. Helmut was born July 26, 1935, the son of the late Emiel and Sophie Hartwich in Sloka, Latvia. Known for his strength, both physically in his youth as an athlete and in spirit as he navigated life's challenges with a determined will.

While in East Germany, he learned the craft of Masonry working under an established Mason. In his younger years, he also enjoyed being in a boxing club in Germany. He and his family had the opportunity to move to the U.S. in 1965. He became the vice president of the German club “GBU” here in Lafayette. He took his masonry skills and started his own successful business, Helmut Hartwich Masonry.

Described by many as bossy yet funny, Helmut had a knack for storytelling that captivated his friends and family. His ability to engage others with humor made him a beloved figure among peers. Beyond his professional pursuits, Helmut had a passion for country music and enjoyed going dancing, reveling in moments of joy and connection.

Helmut will be fondly remembered by his beloved spouse, Veronika Hartwich, and their daughter, Heike Hartwich. He also has many surviving relatives back in Germany. His family meant the world to him, and he cherished every moment spent with them. He was preceded in death by his 5 brothers and 3 sisters. 

Visitation will be held at Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home in Lafayette from 12:30 PM until the funeral service at 1:30 PM on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, officiated by Pastor Walter Hartwich. The interment will be at Armstrong Chapel Cemetery in Otterbein, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692.
