Helen Deckard Bruner

Helen L. Deckard Bruner, 94, of Oxford, IN died at St. Elizabeth East Hospital in Lafayette, IN 10:18 AM Thursday June 9, 2016 where she had been a patient the past week. Helen was born in Templeton, IN February 4, 1922, the daughter of the late Henry and Dorothy D. (Schnarr) Sweet and attended Oxford High School. She was first married to Melvin B. Deckard at Crawfordsville, IN May 20, 1939 and he died April 1947. Helen then married Gordon E. Bruner in Oxford, IN December 31, 1947 and he preceded her in death October 18, 1998. She was a member of the Oxford Federated Church and the Senior Citizens group at the church. Helen was employed at Benton Community School Corporation as the head cook from 1967 until her retirement in 1993 and enjoyed camping. Surviving is a daughter, Diane Reid of Indianapolis, IN; two sons, Kenneth Deckard (wife Judy) and James Deckard (wife Stephanie) both of Oxford; a sister, June Haste of Lafayette, IN  and by ten grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister. Friends may call at the Oxford Federated Church from 1:00 PM until the service at 2:00 PM Sunday, Pastors Phil Rutledge and Linda Sproull officiating. The interment will follow at Oxford West Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to either the Oxford Federated Church or the Benton Community Foundation.
