George G. Usher, 74, of Lafayette, died at Indiana University Arnett Hospital in Lafayette at 12:37 AM Sunday October 21, 2012 where he had been a patient since Tuesday. He had been in failing health the past 6 months.
George was born in Glendale, Ohio July 2, 1938, the son of the late Carroll G. and Mabel Bertram Usher. He married Dorothy E. Vermillion at Chesterfield, IN. August 27, 1961, and she preceded him in death July 24, 2002.
George served in the United States Air Force for 20 years and 20 days, retiring as a Staff Sergeant. He later was employeed at ALCOA for 20 years as a finish cell operator.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge # 347 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1154, both in Lafayette.
Surviving is a son, Robert C. Usher (wife Georgina) of Jessup, Maryland; 2 daughters, Carolyn S. Thompson (husband Jeff) of West Lafayette, IN.; Barbara A. Mullenberg (husband Jeremy) of Lafayette, IN.; a granddaughter, Rebbecca D. Usher of Jessup, Maryland; and 5 grandsons, Zachary B. Davidson of Lafayette, IN.; Nathan P. Usher of Jessup. Maryland.; Benjamin K. Davidson and Liam R. Mullenberg both of Lafayette, IN. and Stephen D. Thompson of West Lafayette, IN. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers.
Friends may call from 4:30 to 7:00 PM Tuesday at the Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home, 1104 Columbia St., Lafayette. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home 10:30 AM Wednesday, Rev. Jack Bess officiating, with entombment to follow with VFW Post 1154 military rites at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens Mausoleum. If friends desire. memorials may be made to the Leukemia Foundation, the American Heart Association or the Area IV Council on Aging.
