Fr. Ambrose M. Ziegler, 83 of Lafayette, passed away at Franciscan East, St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette Monday evening October 22, 2018. Fr. Ziegler was born in Lafayette August 26, 1935, the son of the late John Joseph and Johanna (O’Reilly) Ziegler. He attended St. Meinrad Seminary and was ordained to the Priesthood May 27, 1961. His first assignment was Associate Pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in Fowler, and then named Associate Pastor in 1964 at St. Mary in Muncie. Fr. Ziegler was named Pastor of St. Joseph in Delphi in 1972, and at St. Mary in Dunnington in 1981. In 1985, he was named to the Pastoral Team at All Saints in Logansport and Administrator of St. Elizabeth in Lucerne. He was named Pastor of St. Charles in Otterbein and St. Bridget in Barrydale in 1986. From 1995 until 1997 he served as Pastor of St. Ann in Lafayette, and in 1997 was appointed Pastor of St. Augusta at Lake Village in 1997, where he served until 2002, when he was granted retirement. In retirement, Fr. Ziegler was tireless in providing sacramental help to parishes and priests across the diocese. Surviving is a brother, Joseph Donald Ziegler (wife Frances) of Goodland, IN; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews as well as his housekeeper and caregiver, Nancy Dietzen, who was responsible for maintaining his nutrition and health for the last four decades. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, James and John Ziegler; and by a sister, Margaret Ann Hayes. Friends may call at St. Mary Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception from 3:30 until the Vigil Service at 7:00 PM Monday October 29. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary Cathedral at 11:00 AM Tuesday Oct. 30, Bishop Timothy L. Doherty, Celebrant, Bishop Emeritus William L. Higi and Priests of the Diocese of Lafayette in Indiana as Concelebrants. A private family interment will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Remington.
