Eugene P. "Gene" King, 75, of Lafayette, died at the Indiana Veterans Home in West Lafayette at 6:04 PM Wednesday September 22, 2010 where he had been a patient the past 3 weeks. Mr. King was born in Lafayette May 17, 1935, the son of the late Mareschal N. and Elizabeth C. Brown King, and was a graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School. He married Mary Louise Maddox at Romney, IN. October 12, 1985, and she survives. Mr. King had worked for Schilli Leasing as facilities manager for over 35 years, retiring in 2009. He was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral and sang in the church choir; was a member of American Legion Post 11, and served on the firing squad. He was a member of VFW Post 1154; 40 & 8, Voiture 364, and was serving as their correspondent as well as District 2 State officer; was a member of the Knights of Columbus # 456; Navy Club, Ship 12; the Tippecanotes Barbershop group,the Remington Lios Club, and the National Rifle Association. From 1952 until 1956, he served in the US Navy during the Korean War. Surviving with his wife is son, Mark E. King (wife Darlene) of Arlington, WA.; 2 daughters, Jeanne M. Sexton of Speedway, IN.; Diana L. King of Lafayette; 2 step-sons, Bret Hill of Leesburg, FL. and Bart Hill of Dade City, FL.; a step daughter, Robin Haywood (husband Marty) of Romney, IN.; a brother, G. Patrick King (wife Judy) of Lafayette and a sister, Mary E. Overman of West Lafayette. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter, and 6 step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, David W. King; 3 brothers, Joseph, Robert and James King; a sister Catherine King and a step-granddaughter Beth Ann Haywood. Friends may call at St. Mary's Cathedral from 9:30 AM until the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM Tuesday, Fr. Eric Underwood officiating. Interment at St. Boniface Cemetery with American Legion Post 11 military rites. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Gibault School, St. Mary's Cathedral or the 40 & 8 Nurses Training Scholarship.
