Edward A. Cavanaugh, Jr., passed away on February 18, 2024. He was born May 25, 1929, to Edward A. Cavanaugh and “Nellie” (Renfrow) Cavanaugh. He was a 1948 graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was deployed to Korea in September 1950 and was a Bronze Star recipient. Edward married Dolores J. Thompson on September 1, 1951, at St. Thomas Aquinas in West Lafayette. They lived a brief time in San Francisco, CA, and they returned to Lafayette to raise their family.
Edward was preceded in death by his son Kevin in 2014 and his wife Dolores in 2019.
Surviving is a daughter Cathleen Cavanaugh; four grandchildren: Kelly (Will) Carpenter, Patrick (Heather) Cavanaugh of Michigan, Daniel Gerber, and Jenna (Matt) Shives; and four great-grandchildren.
Even though he lived in Boilermaker Country, Ed was a lifelong Notre Dame fan. He was a 70-year member of the American Legion, and a past Commander at Post 11 in Lafayette. He was also a member of Lafayette Lions Club and Ancient Order of Hibernians.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 AM Friday March 1 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Lafayette until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM, also at St. Ann’s Church, Fr. Dennis O’Keeffe officiating. Interment will follow Mass at St. Mary’s Cemetery, with American Legion Post 11 military rites. Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home is honored to serve the Cavanaugh family.
