Robert D. Martin, M.D. age 77, of Lafayette died Saturday July 5, 2008 at 11:05 P.M. at Rosewalk Village in Lafayette.
He was born December 12, 1930 in Max Bass, N. Dakota, the son of the late Wm. M. and Lela G. Stafford Martin. The family moved to a farm north of Otterbein, IN. in 1931 and he grew up in the Otterbein area. He married Patricia Ann Chenoweth September 2,
1951 at the Otterbein United Methodist Church, and she survives.
He graduated from Purdue University in 1952 with a B.S. degree and from Indiana University in 1960 with an M.D. degree. He practiced Family Medicine in Tempe and Pinetop, AZ. for many years before retiring to Lafayette. Dr. Martin was Chairman of the Dept. of Family Medicine CIGNA Healthplan of Tempe, AZ; President of the American Academy of Family Physicians (Arizona Chapter) in 1971; Chief of Staff of Scottsdale Memorial Hospital, Scottsdale, AZ 1971; Chief of Staff of NavapacheHospital, Pinetop-Lakeside, AZ 1979. FAA Sr. Aviation Medical Examiner for several years, and was a U.S.
Army Korean War Veteran. Dr Martin had many hobbies and a wide range of
interests. He sang with the Orpheus Male Chorus of Phoenix, AZ for 20
years and traveled to many foreign countries with the chorus as Arizona's "Cowboy Ambassadors". Dr. Martin was an Amateur Radio Operator for over 60
years and especially enjoyed communicating using Morse Code.
He did letterpress printing of QSL cards for Amateur Radio Operators.
He was a private pilot with multi-engine and instrument ratings. Dr. Martin was a Masonic Lodge member for 50 years and the Past Master of Otterbein Lodge
#561. He is survived by his wife Patricia Ann; sister Grace Lehe of Indianapolis; brothers Wm.P. Martin (wife Colleen) of Lafayette and Dale S. Martin (wife Carole) of
Wadesville, IN. Friends may call at the HAHN-GROEBER FUNERAL HOME 1104 Columbia St., Lafayette from 5 until 7:30 P.M. Wednesday, with Masonic Rites at 7:30 P.M. Funeral services at the HAHN-GROEBER FUNERAL HOME 11:00 A.M. Thursday, Rev. Chris Madison officiating. Interment Montmorenci Cemetery. Preceded in death by a brother, Philip Martin and a sister Florence Miller.
