Dr. Dean Murray Hunter, M.D., age 92 of Lafayette, passed away at Five Star Senior Living in Lafayette at 6:10 AM Thursday November 30, 2023 where he had resided since January 2020. Dr. Hunter was born in Santa Barbara, CA June 11, 1931, the son of the late Dean Polhemus and Harriet Ynez (Rowan) Hunter and resided on the West coast until entering college at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL-. and remained in the Midwest thereafter, moving to Lafayette in June, 1965. He was a graduate of Menlo Park High School in Menlo Park, CA; received his Bachelor of Science in 1953 from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL; and his doctor of Medicine Degree in 1960 from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology through Northwestern University Medical School, in 1965. He practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology in Lafayette from July 12, 1965 until his retirement February 1, 1998. Prior to entering medical school, Dr. Hunter served in the U.S. Army-from 1953 until 1955. He was a member of the American Medical Association; the Indiana State Medical Association; and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Hunter held appointments at both the former St. Elizabeth and Home Hospitals in Lafayette, and was a clinical assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Lafayette Center for Medical Education, Indiana University School of Medicine. He served on the Board of Directors of Home with Hope from 1990-1992, and was the Medical Director of New Directions, Inc. from 1991-1996. Dr. Hunter was an enthusiastic amateur thespian-acting in many Civic Theater & Purdue Theater productions over the years. In addition, he was a Past President of Civic Theater of Greater Lafayette during the 1967 to 1969 transition from Lafayette Little Theater of Greater Lafayette. He was also a devoted member of St. John’s Episcopal church-and an avid gardener, traveler and opera lover. . Surviving Dr. Hunter are his daughter, Jennifer Ynez Hunter of Evanston, IL; his sister, Judith Ann Droege of Sarasota, FL; 8 grandchildren; and 4 nieces. He was preceded in death by his son, Matthew Dean Hunter-and his longtime partner, Louis Calitri. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 9 at 3:00 PM at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lafayette with Fr. Bradley Pace officiating-followed by the inurnment of remains in the Memorial Garden at St. John’s.
