Darrell Joseph Carte, 80, of Lafayette, died at Lafayette Home Hospital 6:25 AM Wednesday August 5, 2009. He had been in ill health the past 3 years with cancer. Born August 28, 1928, the son of the late Merle and Mildred Caster Carte, he was a lifelong Lafayette resident. Mr. Carte attended Lafayette Jefferson High School, and served in the US Air Force, first in World War II from 1945 until 1949, and later in the Korean War from 1950 until 1953,being stationed in Germany and many other locations in Europe. He married Barbara Deitrick Gleason in St. Cloud, Florida September 7, 1988, and she survives. Mr. Carte had worked as a truck driver, and had owned Carte Rentals. He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church; a life member of the VFW, Post 1154; a life member of the American Legion Post 11, and a life member of the 40 & 8, Voiture 364, holding the office of Chef in 1969. Surviving beside his wife is a daughter, Cheryl Everson (husband Mark) of Santa Rosa, CA.; and a step-son, Randy Gleason (wife Kim) of Lafayette. Also surviving is a grandson, Kevin Ley; and 3 nieces, LuJuana Sue Billerman, Karen Lee Rochester and Sharen Lynn Sheehan. Preceded in death by 2 brothers, James M. and Donald Carte.
