Charles R. Linton, 83, of Crawfordsville, died at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Lafayette 6:30 AM Saturday December 13, 2008. He was born August 27, 1925 in Covington, IN. the son of the late Arch Z. and Anna Martin Linton. He attended the Rabb school, and Perrysville, IN. High School. Mr. Linton was raised on the family farm, and at age 16 became a section hand on the railroad. He later worked for Standard Oil prior to enlisting in the Air Force during World War II, where he served in the 20th Air Force as an airplane mechanic. Mr. Linton married Virginia R. Sweet at Covington March 11, 1944, and she survives. After his discharge from the Air Force, he returned to Standard Oil, and later worked at the General Motors Foundry at Danville, IL. After working for General Motors, he was employed at the Stringer Implement Co. and later worked for Covington Grain Co. as a truck driver. He was named manager of the Rileysburg Grain Co. where he was employed until 1955, becoming manager of the Covington Grain Co. until 1964. He then purchased a partnership with Lester B. Sommer in the New Richmond Farm Supply, and managed it until 1980, when he purchased the business. In 1983, he sold the business and retired. Following his retirement, he and his wife traveled with their children and grandchildren. From 1949 until 1956 he served as a starter flagman for several Indiana racetracks, and was an avid NASCAR fan, and a member of Woodland Heights Christian Church. Surviving with his wife are 2 daughters, Deanna A. Booher (husband Rodney) of Darlington, IN.; Valerie A. Linton of Crawfordsville, IN.; and 3 sons, Stephen R. Linton (wife Cindy) of Wooster, Ohio; Jeffrey C. Linton of Lafayette, IN.; and Gregory L. Linton (wife Kim) of Knoxville, TN. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Randall W. Linton, and a brother Everett Linton. Friends may call at the HAHN-GROEBER FUNERAL HOME, Linden Chapel from 4 until 8 PM Tuesday.
