Charles Henry Link, (Col. Ret. U.S. Air Force) 90, of West Lafayette, died 2:25 P.M. Sunday February 21, 2010 at University Place, where he had resided the past 5 years. Born December 4, 1919, the son of the late August Henry and Phoebe Fisher Link, he was a graduate of Williamsport, IN. High School. Col. Link married Florence L. Foster at Lafayette, IN. Dec. 28, 1942, and she preceded him in death April 7, 2004. He attended First United Methodist Church in West Lafayette, and was a former member of the Shalimar Country Club, Shalimar, Florida. Colonel Link was a patriot and a warrior. He served his country proudly for thirty-three years, first in the Army Air Corps and then the Air Force. He was a World War II, Korean and Viet Nam Veteran. As a military pilot, he flew missions around the world. One of the most rewarding and challenging aspects of his career was being instrumental in the construction of the DEW (Defense Early Warning) Line. He flew airlift missions into the Arctic Region and was in the operational command of the airlift for this project. Upon retirement, he resided in northern Florida for thirty-three years. He enjoyed fishing in the Gulf of Mexico and playing golf with friends and family. In 2005, he moved to West Lafayette, IN. Surviving are 2 sons, Rev. Charles M. "Mike" Link (wife Carol) of rural Attica, and James A. "Jim" Link (wife Jane) of Sunman, IN. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, along with a special friend, Margie Gandy.
