On 28 March 2018, Barbara Jean Kingma passed away peacefully and in the company of her family at the University Place in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Barbara was born on 25 December 1929 in Hammond, Indiana to parents Mabel and Thomas Worley. After graduating from Hammond High School Barbara obtained a degree in nursing from Home Hospital in Lafayette in 1951. She married her loving husband Gordon Jacob Kingma on 19 January 1952 in Crown Point, Indiana and the couple then moved for a few years to Indianapolis before finally settling down as longtime Lafayette residents, where they remained very active in the community and in their church.
Barbara’s gift to her family and friends was that of unbridled kindness and love. She was always there for us, always positive and always selfless. She shared in our joy, made us laugh, comforted us when we were down, and showed us through her actions how to live a life for others. She was our anchor.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Gordon, and their six children – Cheryl Bice, Nancy (Christoph) Rodrique, Kathy Glover, Gordon Kingma, Annette Moore and Peter Kingma – as well as 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Also surviving is Barbara’s brother Thomas Worley. She was preceded in death by her three sisters, Dorothy Keen, Mildred Hill, and Virginia Sullivan.
Visitation for friends is from 10:30 AM until 12:00 PM on Monday, April 2 at St Mary’s Cathedral in Lafayette. The funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Jeff Martin and Father Thomas Shoemaker at St. Mary’s Cathedral at 12:00 PM, followed immediately thereafter by grave side prayers at St. Boniface Cemetery.
