Barbara I. Brutus, 82, of Pine Village, IN. died at 11:04 PM Wednesday May 20, 2015 at St. Elizabeth East Hospital in Lafayette. Born February 6, 1933 in Home Hospital in Lafayette, IN. She graduated from Pine Village High School in 1951. Barbara was married to Glen J. Brutus of rural Pine Village on December 21, 1952, and they later divorced. She was employed eight and a half years at Pine Village School as the school secretary. She retired from Benton Central Jr. Sr. High School in 1997 after 20 years as the Senior High School Secretary. Barbara was a member of the Pine Village United Methodist Church and had played organ and piano for many years for church, weddings and funerals. She authored the Pine Village News column in the Warren County Review Republican Newspaper of which she was very proud.
Barbara enjoyed the company of her grandchildren. Her hobbies included cooking, knitting, playing piano and organ. Many friends and family enjoyed her hand knit scarves and afghans. Many children and adults as well in the Pine Village Community knew Barbara by her name of "Graggy" given her by her younger grandchildren. She also had special names from older grandchildren of "Grand Ma Ma" and "Grandmother". She is survived by a daughter, Susan Brutus of Lebanon, IN, a son, Eric Brutus of rural Pine Village (companion Gloria McGowen), and a son Barry Brutus of Pine Village with whom she shared her home. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Baxley Hamilton (companion Misty Caudill and daughter Cecelia) of Pine Village, IN, Abby Hamilton of Carmel, IN; Taylor Mortimore (husband Cody) of Chievres, Belgium, where he is stationed with the US Army; and Paige and Clayton Brutus of rural Pine Village along with three great-grandchildren, Edison, Patton and Indira Mortimore of Chievres, Belgium. She was preceded in death by her parents Hilmer and Dorothy (Atkinson) Howarth; a brother David Howarth and a son, Baxley Brutus. A memorial service will be held at the Pine Village United Methodist Church 10:00 AM Tuesday June 2, Pastors John Christy and Mike Link officiating.
