Arthur Russell Hoaks, 75, of Oxford, died at his residence 10:00 AM Friday April 17, 2009, where he had resided for 54 years. Mr. Hoaks had been in ill health the past 10 years. Born November 29, 1933 in Parr, Indiana, the son of the late Ora and Ethel Rowley Hoaks, he attended Boswell Schools. He married Clara Louise Toy at Covongton, IN. February 19, 1955, and she survives. Mr. Hoaks had worked as an electrician at Purdue University 25 years, retiring in 1995 and previously had worked at Henry's Hardware in Oxford for 14 years. He was a member of the Oxford Church of Christ, the Pine Village Masonic Lodge, and the Purdue Retiree's. Mr. Hoaks enjoyed bowling, fishing, and camping, doing crafts and woodworking, and riding around Oxford in his golf cart with his dog, Gidget. He had formerly owned and drove stock cars for many years, and was a NASCAR fan. Surviving with his wife is a daughter, Robbyn E. Freeman (husband David) of Oxford; 2 sons, Rick E. and Russell E. Hoaks, both of Oxford; 2 brothers, Charles Hoaks of Illinois and Richard Hoaks of California; and 3 sisters, Mary Hoaks of Oxford; Janet Pancake of Illinois and Alice Gordon (husband Tom) of Kokomo, IN. Also surviving are 2 grandchildren, Brad (wife Christina) Hoaks and Andy (wife Angie) Hoaks, and 2 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by 2 sisters.
Friends may call one hour prior to the service at 11:00 AM Tuesday at the Oxford Church of Christ, Larry McMillan officiating. Pine Village Masonic Rites will be held at 10:45 AM Tuesday.
